The ŠKODA SRM 125/4000 lathe is a robust, versatile machine designed for heavy-duty machining of rotary parts. Following its modernization, it combines a proven, rigid design with modern Siemens CNC control, allowing you to perform both roughing and precision finishing operations on a single machine.
The machine’s design enables both single-piece and small-batch production—including roughing and precision finishing, as well as turning threads, tapered surfaces, internal and external radii, and shaped rotary workpieces in CNC mode. The control system supports thread cutting and turning at a constant cutting speed.
01 Key Advantages
Modern Siemens Control Systems
CNC Sinumerik 828D with Sinamics drives, 1PH7 main motor with 39 kW of power and continuous speed control in each mechanical stage.
Heidenhain Precision
Absolute tool position measurement using Heidenhain LC 185 and LC 495 scales in both axes for repeatable accuracy.
Complete Modernization
Regrinded bed guideways, ball screws, new spindle bearings, new electrical wiring, and a Rittal IP 54 control cabinet with air conditioning.
02 What the Machine Can Do
- Workpieces weighing up to 14,000 kg and with a diameter of 1,250 mm above the bed
- Distance between tips up to 4,000 mm
- Turning Threads, Tapered Surfaces, and Radii on a CNC Machine
- Constant cutting speed for a clean finish
- 3 mechanical speeds with continuous speed control
- Torque up to 34,000 Nm
- Supporting the workpiece with two chucks
- Handwheel (JOG mode) for adjustment and positioning
03 Scope of the Modernization
Spindle housing: new roller bearings for the spindle and gearbox mounts, new lubrication piping and lubrication unit, new electrical wiring. Shifting of three mechanical gears via Hänchen hydraulic cylinders; emergency brake with hydraulic release and limit switch control. The main motor is connected to the input shaft of the drive housing via a toothed belt with a 1:3 fixed gear ratio.
Bed: The guide surfaces for both the saddle and the tailstock have been reground and inspected horizontally and vertically in accordance with the ŠKODA accuracy protocol. The Z-axis ball screw is mounted in ZARN-type bearings; new electrical wiring; Heidenhain absolute encoders.
Support: guide surfaces lined with BIPLAST V material and machined to fit, new lubrication unit, enclosed cable carrier, protective cover with a safety lock and an arm for the control panel.
Spindle: guide surfaces lined with bronze and aligned coaxially with the spindle; clamping pressure on the tip measured by a strain gauge sensor in the quill and displayed on the tailstock unit; mechanical adjustment along the bed with a safety clutch and brake.
Electrical and Paint: Completely new electrical system and wiring; Rittal control cabinet in IP 54 rating with air conditioning; control panel with a 10″ Siemens monitor. Painted with two-component PUR paint in RAL colors—a combination of blue and gray.

05 Accessories and Safety
The machine includes two support blocks to hold the workpiece in place during machining, ensuring no oscillations or vibrations. The workpiece is manually clamped into the spindle’s four-jaw chuck. The moving and rotating parts of the drive mechanism are covered by a solid guard with an access door and a safety lock—when the door is open, the machine switches to adjustment and diagnostic mode, with limits on feed rates and spindle speed.
Areas that may be considered hazardous are accessible only with a tool. The machine complies with safety regulations and the requirements for CE marking.
