Machine Description

XYZ Machine Tools is a British manufacturer whose ProTurn SLX series is among the most widely used workshop CNC lathes in Europe. This model features a center distance of 1,750 mm and a swing over bed of 560 mm, making it a versatile machine for shafts, flanges, bushings, and longer workpieces.

The spindle, with a 104 mm through-hole and a Camlock D1-11 chuck, is mounted on three bearings; driven by an 11-kW motor via a two-stage gearbox with stepless speed control from 30 to 1,800 1/min. The guideways are hardened to HRC 48–52, and the headstock features a wet sump lubrication system with external oil cooling—a design built for round-the-clock operation.

The ProtoTRAK SLX control system allows for programming on the shop floor, directly at the machine, using a simple dialog interface. Operators accustomed to conventional lathes can become familiar with it within a single shift, while having access to cycles for threads, tapered surfaces, radii, and repeat machining. The machine can be operated in both manual and fully automated modes.
